Dog Days of… SCHOOL!

Yep, you read that right… We’re back to our schoolwork already!

We’ve started “early” before. Back in 2010, when I was expecting Emme to arrive in October and figured I’d want to take a few weeks off from school.

But last year, we took the whole month of December off… even though it wasn’t planned that way… and we really enjoyed it! Except for when the end of May rolled around this year and we weren’t through everything we’d wanted to get through. 🙁 So as we trudged into June with the last vestiges of our schoolwork for the year, I began to contemplate the idea of year-round schooling. But that thought lasted for about a day as our summer schedule got really full, really quickly!

So that’s how I decided on August 1st as our start date. I figure if we can get a jump on our schoolwork this month, then taking all of December off will be even more fun this year, knowing that it won’t throw us behind finishing up at the end of May. 😉

This year, we’re going “all in” with Simply Charlotte Mason {SCM}. 😉 I say “all in” because over the past few years I have successfully used many of the wonderful guides and resources from them and I decided this year to just quit my plugging in pieces of it here and there… to quit worrying about making sure I get all the boxes checked on an already-planned-out-for-me pre-packaged curriculum… and to give this well-rounded, suggestive, yet not demanding, program a try.

*Due to some math difficulties we’re working to overcome with Sammi, she “started over” in math in April of this year with the Math-U-See program. She finished Alpha in 2 months and is progressing through Beta at nearly the same pace! We hope to have her “caught up” to “grade level” later this year.  🙂  Math-U-See has been instrumental in helping her to overcome these difficulties and has helped her to enjoy math again! We are thrilled to be able to highly recommend it.

Well… there ya have it! A good bit of what we’re doing this year represents change for us, so I’m adding this post to my “series” on change in your homeschool called “Out with the Old, In with the New” and of course, it wouldn’t be homeschool blogging without linking up for the coolest NOT Back-to-School Blog Hop around! 😉 We’re also joining in on the Apologia Blog Roll this year, so be sure to check them out too!

Hope you all get off to as great a start this school year as we have… We’re excited about all this year has in store.
