Tools for School–2013 Edition

It’s hard to believe that it’s time to get back to the books already for another school year! Honestly though, we are ready. We’ve had a great summer filled with family, friends, fun, and even a little travel! {More about all that in a few future posts…}

Once again, we are getting things going again relatively earlier compared to most folks around us, but last year was our first year starting “early,” which allowed a little more time off throughout the year for breaks, and we loved it. I guess you could consider us year-round homeschoolers…So it is with lots of excitement that I share with y’all our curriculum choices for school year 2013 – 2014…

Preschool

Emme, our youngest will turn 3 in October and is eager to be with her brother and sisters during “school time,” so this year we’ll include her by using most of the same things I used for her sister Ellie, who was 3 last year at this time…

LOTS & LOTS of Manipulatives! 🙂
Leap Frog’s Letter Factory
Fun Workbooks
My First LeapPad
Making Great Readers
SCM’s Early Years Read Alouds Book List

Ellie, our third child, is turning 4 in just a few days and is ready to start slowly working toward reading! This year, we are trying something completely new: Easy Peasy All-in-One Homeschool. The level for 4 year old Pre-K is called “Getting Ready 1.” Ellie loves doing her lessons on my Kindle Fire and then completing whatever activities go along with the lesson in her very own notebook.

Elementary and Middle

Lawrie is 8 and is starting 3rd grade.
Sammi is 11 and is starting 6th grade.
They will each be doing their individual levels of English and Math on the Easy Peasy site. In addition, we’ll be using Life of Fred… which we just discovered this past spring and lllllooooovvvvveeeee!

Family Work

Together we’ll continue with our both Simply Charlotte Mason’s Literature Guide and Scripture Memory system.

We’ll also be finishing up just the tail end of our SCM Module 1 “Genesis through Deuteronomy & Ancient Egypt” {we didn’t quite get all the way through it} and we’ll head right into SCM Module 2 “Joshua through Malachi and Ancient Greece.” These modules encompass Bible, Geography, and History!

And we’re also sticking with Apologia’s Young Explorer Series, with Zoology 2: Swimming Creatures.

As we complete our first week of school work today, I feel like we’ve got a good fit this year. The addition of some computer-based work is helping Sammi & Lawrie to gain some independence in completing portions of their work, allowing me a little more time to work with Ellie & Emme… and streamlining some of our subjects in general seems to be allowing us to maximize our time.

Once again, I’m linking up with iHomeschoolNetwork’s “Not” Back to School Hop! I’m looking forward to reading about how everyone’s years are stacking up for 2013-2014. See ya ‘round the hop…
