{ Homeschooling }

I was homeschooled from 8th grade through 12th grade by my parents, using the A-Beka Video Home School curriculum.

When it was time for my oldest to start Kindergarten, it became clear that the Lord was directing our family down the path of homeschooling as well!

Much has changed in the homeschool world since I was the student and it truly is like stepping into another world to become the homeschool Mom, but this is our eighth year of homeschooling as a family and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

*I am a very big fan of the program Making Great Readers by Wallace Howard. Mr. Howard used to teach Kindergarten at the elementary school that I attended & he developed this program after years of working with beginning readers. Despite the proven successes of his program, he was told that he could not continue to use his program in the classroom because it was not “state-approved.” Since retiring from teaching, he has been working with teachers from all over the country, to help them better understand how children best learn to read. He describes his program as “a synthetic  phonics process, with a kinesthetic component, that emphasizes phonemic awareness.”

We are also members of a wonderful homeschool support group in our area… SALT – Seeking And Learning Truth and of the state support group, North Carolinians for Home Education (NCHE).
